| From the secluded and serene "Mosteiro de Alpendurada" in the town of Alpendurada, the wine traveller should stear towards the city of Marco de Canavezes. On the way one will run across the ruins "do Fidalgo" (of the nobleman) in Vila Boa de Quires. As one enters Marco de Canavezes, one of the most recent projects of the Pritzker Prize winning architect Álvaro Siza Vieira is encountered in the modernist interpretation of the traditional Portuguese church: the "Igreja de Santa Maria." Next stop could be the archaeological park in Freixo-Tongobriga, which displays remnants of the Roman civilization. On the way to Baião and Eiriz, the beauty of the Northern Portuguese landscape can be fully experienced in the Douro Valley, where mostly ancient houses are scattered throughout the landscape. One of the dwellings is the “Casa de Tormes", which was the home to one of Portugal's most brilliant 19th century authors, Eça de Queirós. |
