Sousa itinerary

Two important milestones for the development of Portugal in the middle ages are the convents of Cête (county of Paredes) and Paço de Sousa (county of Penafiel). Travelling on through the city of Penafiel, which is considered to be the historical capital of the Sousa Valley, and following in the direction of Lousada, the traveller will have the opportunity of inspecting a rare witness to centuries of arab occupation of the Iberian Peninsula: the "Torre dos Mouros" (Mourish Tower). In the higher regions of the valley, the city of Felgueiras is worth a visit due to its architecturally notable convent of "Pombeiro" ("Mosteiro de Pombeiro"), as well as the intricate and beautiful traditional embroideries of Lixa. The final destination of this route is the idyllic city of Amarante, where a visit to the church and cloister of the 17th century Mosteiro de São Gonçalo is highly recommended. Other points of interest include the 7th century bridge that connects the margins of the river Tâmega, as well as the Amadeo Souza-Cardoso Museum dedicated to this 20th century avant-garde artiste.
