| The contemporary city of Famalicão serves as the point of departure for this tour. As a major hinge point for most rail and automobile traffic in the north of the country, Famalicão hosts a large farmer´s market each Wednesday, at which one can purchase anything ranging from pottery and fresh produce to live piglets. For an even larger weekly market or fair experience, we suggest the medieval city of Barcelos. The immense farmer´s, craft and garment market takes place on Thursdays. Barcelos is one of the most renowned regions for traditional pottery and embroidery, which is emphasized by the exhibits in the "Museu da Olaria." A gothic architectural influence is displayed in the city centre as well as on the 14th century bridge over the Cávado river. Finally, Barcelos is also the home of the famous Rooster of Portugal or "Galo de Barcelos". |
